Robert Poth is a product of Pinellas County Schools having graduated from Northeast High School in 1977. Poth then earned his bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Florida.
Poth began teaching in Pinellas County in 1983 and was a classroom teacher for 15 years, serving at Tyrone and Sexton elementary schools. He also served as an Assistant Principal at Cross Bayou Elementary School and as Principal at Ridgecrest Elementary, Douglas Jamerson Elementary, Cypress Woods Elementary, John Hopkins Middle, and East Lake high schools. From 2007-2008, Poth served as a principal on district assignment with schools in Region 2.
Poth was the recipient of the Outstanding Mathematics Teacher of the Year from the Pinellas Classroom Teachers of Mathematics. The White House and the National Science Foundation have also honored him with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. In 1990, Poth was a finalist for Pinellas County Teacher of the Year.
Poth has served on numerous state committees in the areas of FCAT Mathematics and Science. Poth was one of the principal authors of Science For All Children, which became the first version of the Florida State Science Standards.
Poth is married to Julie Poth, who is the District Supervisor for Elementary Science. The Poths have six children, two of which are teachers in Pinellas County Schools.
